Abstract

A cleansing composition comprises a mixture of (a) at least one water soluble alkylbenzene sulphonate having 9-15 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, preferably an alkali metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium, e.g. triethanolamine, dodecylbenzene sulphonate and particularly the sodium salt, and (b) a tertiary amine oxide of formula R1R2R3N--->O where R1 is an alkyl group, a hydroxyalkyl group, or a non-aromatic interrupted alkyl group of 10-18, preferably 12-16, carbon atoms, and R2 and R3 are each alkyl groups of 1-3 carbon atoms, the weight ratio of (a) to (b) being 20:1 to 1:5, more particularly 10:1 to 1:2, and preferably 1:1. Many suitable amine oxides are listed. The composition, when used in a granular detergent composition, may also contain sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium sulphate, sodium silicate, and coconut monoethanolamide; when used in a liquid detergent, ethanol and water may be present and (a) is present as the ammonium salt; and when used in a scouring cleanser, silica flour and trisodium phosphate are included. The composition may also be mixed with coconut and tallow soaps and made into bars. Specification 437,566 is referred to.
