Abstract

938,724. Modifying metallic surfaces; phosphating, AMCHEM S.A. June 27, 1962 [Aug. 9, 1961], No. 24738/62. Class 82. Chemical conversion coating solutions are applied to metal surfaces by coating rollers wetted with the coating solution, said rollers being rotated in contact with the metal surface such that there is opposed relative motion between the surfaces of the rollers and the surface of the metal. The metal surface, in strip form, is moved past fixed contra-rotating rollers as shown in the roller-coating apparatus, where strip 10 is moved forward past rotatable coating roller 12 positively driven in the reverse direction and wetted by driving contact with transfer roller 14 and pick-up roller 16 which is partially submerged in conversion coating solution contained in reservoir 18. Additionally or alternatively the other side of metal strip 10 may be coated by reversely driven coating roller 20 in driving contact with pick-up roller 22 partially submerged in coating solution contained in reservoir 24. After coating the metal strip passes through squeegee rollers 30, 32 to remove excess coating solution. Chemical conversion coatings, such as phosphate or oxalate coatings, may be applied to the surfaces of any metal, including iron, steel, zinc, cadmium and magnesium; but the invention is especially applicable to the chromate coating of aluminium or aluminium alloy. The rollers may be made from synthetic resins and the natural and synthetic rubbers in order that the surface durometer hardness may vary between 30 to 90 and preferably 40-60. Optimum efficiency is achieved when the reverse tangential speed of the coating rollers is about 50% or more of the forward linear speed of the metal strip. Specifications 735,819 and 893,771 are referred to.
