Abstract

A solution for use in forming oxalate coatings on metal surfaces comprises oxalic acid, fluoboric acid or a salt thereof, and an oxidizing agent. The pH of the solution may vary from 0.7 to 2.0. The oxidizing agent may be sodium chlorate and a soluble salt of a polyvalent metal less noble than iron, e.g. aluminium sulphate, may be present. The coating may serve as a foundation for paint or as a lubricant-carrying surface for plastic deformation or may be used in combination with oils to enhance corrosion resistance. Iron and carbon steel surfaces may be treated.
