Abstract

Sodium aluminate liquor containing suspended red mud is filtered through a canvas cloth in a filter press, with addition of a filter aid consisting of or containing natural or synthetic aragonite (orthorhombic calcium carbonate) and in the proportion of 0,1 to 10 gms. of aid per litre of liquor. The aid may alternatively be applied to the cloth before filtration. A specific filter aid composition comprises in admixture aragonite and calcite (hexagonal calcium carbonate), the aragonite being present as particles from 1 to 5 microns in width and from 5 to 40 microns in length.ALSO:Sodium aluminate liquor containing suspended red mud is filtered through a canvas cloth in a filter press, with addition of a filter acid consisting of or containing natural or synthetic aragonite (orthorhombic calcium carbonate) and in the proportion of 0,1 to 10 gms. of aid per litre of liquor. Other process liquors may have up to 20 gms. of aid per litre. The aid may alternatively be applied to the cloth before filtration. A specific filter aid composition comprises in admixture aragonite and calcite (hexagonal calcium carbonate), the aragonite being present as particles from 1 to 5 microns in width and from 5 to 40 microns in length.
