Abstract

1,203,950. Treating red mud from Bayer process. JUI-HSIUNG TSAI. 25 Sept., 1967, No. 43624/67. Heading C1A. Red mud formed in the production of alumina by the Bayer process is mixed with water, the resulting suspension is screened through a sieve and SO 2 is passed into the filtrate until the SO 2 concentration is approximately 15% by weight, the solid matter of the mixture is allowed to settle by sedimentation and the resultant clear liquor passed into a vacuum evaporator, the sediment is washed with sulphurous acid, the washings being passed into the vacuum evaporator and the sediment containing Fe 2 O 3 is removed; the liquor in the vacuum evaporator is heated until a pH of 4À5-5 is reached, the SO 2 liberated is recovered, the resulting suspension is filtered to give a residue containing Al(OH)SO 3 and a liquor, which liquor is evaporated to saturation and cooled to give Na 3 SO 3 crystals, and sulphuric acid is added to the Al(OH)SO 3 containing residue to convert it to sulphate, the precipitate of silica remaining is removed and a potassium or ammonium salt is add d to the liquor, the solution concentrated and seeded with alum to crystallize out potassium or ammonium alum. The mud is mixed with water in a ratio of 1: 2À5 by weight and the SO 2 liberated throughout the process is recovered and re-used. The SiO 2 residue may be dried at 280‹ C. to form silica gel or may be mixed with sodium hydroxide, heated and concentrated to form water glass.
