938,599. Ratchet clutches. ETABLISSEMENTS M. DUBAN. Feb. 21, 1961 [Feb. 23, 1960], No. 6354/61. Class 80 (2). A freewheel hub for cycles &c. comprises sprockets 3, 4, 5, 9 mounted on a driving member 2 of a freewheel device which is supported on a driven member 1. The sprockets 3-5 are retained axially between a shoulder 2<SP>2</SP> of the driving member and a shoulder 9<SP>1</SP> formed on the sprocket 9 which is screwed to the member 2. The sprockets 3-5 are spaced apart by distance rings 6 or by integral flanges 5<SP>1</SP>, and are drivingly connected to the member 2 either by the member having a non-circular section, such as circular with one or more flats, engaging in corresponding bores in the sprockets, or by a jamming roller or like coupling transmitting rotation in one or both directions between the sprockets and the member 2. As shown in Figs. 2 and 6, the member 2 is circular in section and rollers 7 are mounted in recesses 10 in the sprockets having sloping faces 101, 10<SP>2</SP> to lock the sprockets for both directions of rotation. Only one sloping face is provided in each recess if the sprockets are to be locked for one direction of rotation only. In a bi-directional locking device shown in Fig. 10, the member 2 has flats 2<SP>4</SP> and the sprockets have corresponding recesses 14 in each of which a jamming roller is mounted. To enable the member 1 to be unscrewed from a hub, a bifurcated spring clip (Fig. 11, not shown), is provided having limbs engaging in aligned grooves 2<SP>5</SP>, 1<SP>2</SP> in the driving and driven freewheel members to hold them together so that the assembly can be unscrewed by a fetter key acting on the pinion 3. If the ends of the clip limbs engage the screw threads of the hub the clip will remain in place in the grooves 2<SP>5</SP>, 1<SP>2</SP> during the unscrewing. The freewheel can be converted into a fixed wheel in a similar way.
