In a device for perforating a tape in code for controlling a typographical composing machine, a conventional " Linotype " (Registered Trade Mark) keyboard is used to control the assembly of counter-weights, cams and driving rollers which is used in a composing-machine to control the matrix escapements, said assembly being modified in that the escapement-actuating rod is utilized to control electrical contacts in an electrical system for energizing electromagnets operating at least seven punches, and in that the usual cam is modified to have an actuating period of between 1/3000 and 1/30 second, having an actuating peripheral surface projecting over an angular distance of 5.4-60 degrees. The rod 8, Fig. 2, controls contacts 10, 11 under control of a cam 6a, Figs. 2 and 3, having an actuating surface 6d instead of the usual surface 6b shown in chain lines. The magnets E1-E10, Fig. 6, are arranged approximately in a circle surrounding the punches. The code punches are actuated by magnets E1-E7. Magnets E9 and E10 produce tape-feed perforations in every cycle, and magnet E2 operates the tape-feed mechanism. Magnet E8, Figs. 6 and 7, controls contacts V, W in the electrical system, Fig. 5 (not shown), and also oscillates an arm 24, which on moving upwards causes a pawl, 30, to index a ratchet wheel 31 on the shaft of a pin-roller feeding the tape. A roller-pawl 33 engages a ratchet wheel 32 to hold the tape in register during punching. A button is provided for manual adjustment of the tape. The electrical system includes means to produce repetitive energization of the magnets E8-E10 to feed the tape without code signals, and a manual switch to produce continuous feed of the tapes.
