Abstract

937,987. Reducing surface friction in turbines. GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE STERKRADE A.G. June 22, 1962 [June 24, 1961], No. 24034/61. Class 4. A turbine, e.g. a radial flow compresser, has a rotor 1 from which a flow path 2 extends downstream to a second rotor, (not shown), one or more slots 13, 16 being formed in a boundary wall 7, 5 of the path for removing, by suction, the boundary layer of fluid on the wall into space 12, 15 from which it passes by one or more slots 14, 17 to gaps 11, 10 between the rotor 1 and the wall at a position closer to the axis of the turbine than the outlet of rotor 1. Walls 5 are attached to casing 4 and wall 7 is attached by vanes 3 to a wall 5. Rotation of rotor 1 draws fluid through slots 14, 17 from spaces 12, 15; the rotor may have grooves or blades to enable more fluid to be drawn through the slots.
