937,461. Drying peas &c. UNILEVER Ltd. June 16, 1961 [June 24, 1960], No. 22258/60. Class 49. [Also in Group XIII] Drying particulate foods, e.g. peas, other pulses, diced root vegetables, rice and barley, involves fluidizing the food in a bed on a horizontal, rigid, air-permeable base by passing warm air upwardly through the base and vibrating the base in a direction inclined to the horizontal. With the apparatus of the drawing, peas fed from a hopper 4 on to a horizontal, perforated steel plate 1 are discharged therefrom by a ramp 5, the inclination of the ramp being adjusted to produce a bed of peas 4 inches deep on the plate; vibration of framework 2 of the plate 1, with frequency 1000-1500 cycles/min. and amplitude <SP>1</SP>/ 16 -“ inch, is produced by anhydraulic displacement pump 8 and two vibrator piston units 7, the vibration being in a direction 20-50 degrees to the horizontal and promoting conveyance of the peas to the discharge end of the plate; air at 80-160‹ F. from a duct 14 is supplied upwardly through the perforations in the plate 1 at 200-600 ft./min.; preferably there are a number of the drying units in cascade, the peas being dried to not below 20% of moisture. Vibration of the base permits the fluidizing at air velocities insufficient in themselves for satisfactory fluidization.
