937,195. Blow-moulding hollow articles. OWENS-ILLINOIS GLASS CO. Oct. 6, 1959 [Oct. 16, 1958; Jan. 8, 1959; Jan. 28, 1959; Jan. 30, 1959], No. 33824/59. Class 87(2). In the blow-moulding of a hollow article from an extruded tube, the tube is engaged prior to the closing of the mould to allow the tube to be treated. The treatment may comprise merely compaction of the material due to its own weight or e.g. as shown in Fig. 8, the tube may be bent by moving guides 36, whilst the lower end is held by guides 35, or the cross-section may be changed to e.g. oval or hexagonal shape (see Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). As shown in Fig. 10, a tube 30 is extruded, mould halves 45 moved towards each other, but not closed, to bring members 35, 36 into engagement with the tube 30, the gripped length of tube severed by a knife 57, and immediately after severing, the mould is lowered. During this movement, the tube recovers from stresses imposed on it. A blowing head is then inserted into the bottom of the tube, the mould closed, and the tube blown into the shape of the mould.
