Abstract

A process for the manufacture of high density polyethylene (i.e. density at least 0,94) compositions by compounding said polyethylene with additives employing the masterbatch technique, comprises blending part or all of the polyethylene additives with a low density polyethylene (i.e. density below 0,94) so as to produce a masterbatch, and subsequently blending this masterbatch with the high density polyethylene. Small amounts of other monomers, e.g. butene, may have been copolymerized with the ethylene. The additives may be pigments, antioxidants, stabilizers, lubricants, and particularly carbon black. An example describes the compounding of a high density polyethylene containing N,N1-di-beta-naphthyl-p-phenylene diamine with a masterbatch of low density polyethylene and carbon black. The compositions may be formed into shaped articles, e.g. tubes. Specifications 471,590, 799,392, 799,823, 801,031, 803,198, 807,644, 830,824, 867,556 and 935,625 are referred to.
