Abstract

934,902. Pile driving mandrels. W. H. COBI. Jan. 4, 1961 [March 23, 1960], No. 368/61. Class 68 (2) An expansible mandrel for driving pile shells comprises a plurality of oppositely disposed segments 6, 8 engaging the inner wall of a pile shell 2 and having flexible pneumatic pressure container means 14 interposed between the inner surfaces of the segments and means, operated independent of the pressure means 14, disposed between oppositely disposed segments adjacent the lower end 4 of the shell for maintaining said oppositely disposed segments in engagement with the inner wall of the shell. The pressure means 14 is closed at its lower end by a plug 16 and connected at its upper end by a hose 18 to a source of compressed air. The other means comprises a cylinder 70 fixed to a segment 6 and having a piston and piston-rod 78 urged by hydraulic pressure into engagement with the opposite segment 8. Hydraulic fluid is transmitted to, and exhausted from, the cylinder via a conduit 80 by pumps 82 and 89, respectively. Specification 894,174 is referred to.
