Abstract
934,442. Two-part couplings. CANNON ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 3, 1959 [Sept. 25, 1958], No. 30081/59. Class 38 (1). A plug-and-socket connector comprising shells 16, 15 respectively enclosing pin-andsocket contact-carrying pairs of insulating blocks 25, 26 and 43, 44 has a releasable locking device 35 for securing the plug- and-socket members together. As shown, the socket member has a further pair of socket contact - carrying blocks 49 slidable on bolts 52 and spring- urged away from the blocks 43, 44 but which can be drawn towards the latter blocks by the locking device to engage the contacts 18 carried thereby with rearwardlyextending pins 48 on the contacts 19 carried by blocks 43, 44. The locking device comprises a screw-threaded socket 115 carried by the blocks 49 and engageable by a stud 111 having a stem 112 locked in the end of a tubular shaft 82, which extends through a barrel 36 carried by the plug member, by keys 108, Fig. 5, which are held in engagement with a groove 113 in stem 112 by cam surfaces 104 on the barrel. The shaft and barrel are movable relatively to each other either by means of a lanyard 125 attached to a collar 74 carried by the inner end of the barrel, or by fluid pressure acting on a piston 83 carried by the shaft and slidable in the collar 74. Thus the cam surfaces 104 may be withdrawn from locking engagement with the keys 108 to release the stud 111. In engaging the plug-and-socket members, the plug with the stud 111 locked thereto is engaged with the contacts 19 and the barrel 36 and shaft 82 are rotated by means of a knob 88, thereby causing the stud to draw the socket 115 and blocks 49 towards the blocks 43, 44 against the biasing springs to complete the circuit through the connector and at the same time lock the coupling members together. To release these, the stud 111 is unlocked as described above, either by the lanyard or fluid pressure, thus allowing the blocks 49 to retract and disengage contacts 18, 19 such movement being assisted by a spring-loaded rod 101 in the shaft 82. The plug member may then be removed leaving the stud attached to the socket member from which it may be subsequently removed when the members are to be re-connected. The blocks 49 and further set of socket contacts 18 may be omitted in which case the socket 115 will be carried by the blocks 43, 44 and release of the locking device will cause the rod 101 to eject the plug member from the socket member.
