Abstract

933,766. Powder metallurgy. YARDNEY INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. Oct. 12, 1959 [Oct. 10, 1958 (2)], No. 34541/59. Class 82. [Also in Groups XXII and XXXVI] In making an electrode for an electric accumulator or battery, a previously sintered mass of silver particles is bonded to a metal support, the bonding being effected by heat and pressure at a temperature below the melting-point of the mass and support. A grid 50, Fig. 4, is made from thin silver sheets formed into troughs 56, 56<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4A, two halves of the grid being joined by soldering, welding, &c., and each trough has a block 57<SP>1</SP>, 57<SP>11</SP> of sintered silver particles bonded therein by heat and pressure. The bottoms of the troughs may be stamped out to form windows or may be perforated to provide circular holes or slots or alternatively the grid may be made of perforated metal or of wires bonded to a sheet. A flat silver sheet with an integral terminal connection or a corrugated sheet has blocks of sintered silver particles bonded to each side and in a modification the. support 311, Fig. 6A, of silver or copper has bonded thereto blocks 315, 315<SP>1</SP> of sintered silver particles with embedded conductor 313. Bonding may be effected in a press having upper and lower gas or electrically-heated platens, the lower being movable upwardly by a ram. Alternatively, current may be discharged through the sintered blocks in a manner similar to spot-welding. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 912,802.
