Abstract

An aqueous cleaning composition which is suitable for cleaning aluminium surfaces when applied at 140 DEG -170 DEG F. comprises a surfactant and 3-10% by weight of a sodium borate, preferably borax. The surfactant preferably comprises a mixture of 0,01-5% anionic wetting agent and 0,01-5% of a nonionic wetting agent, by weight of the aqueous solution. Suitable nonionic wetting agents are ethylene oxide condensates with fatty acids, with polypropylene glycol, and particularly with C8-12-alkyl phenols, such condensates containing 8-13 ethylene oxide units. Suitable anionic wetting agents are the C8-16-alkyl benzene sulphonic acids which may contain two further nuclear substituent methyl groups, and alkali metal salts thereof, especially dodecylbenzene sulphonic acid and the sodium and potassium salts thereof. A concentrate suitable for dissolution in water to form the aqueous composition comprises 90-98% by weight borax and 1-5% each of the anionic and nonionic wetting agents. Specification 865,497 is referred to.ALSO:Aluminium surfaces, especially those of partially stripped anodized aluminium, are cleaned without corrosion by contact at 140-170 DEG F. with an aqueous solution comprising a surfactant and 3-10% by weight of a sodium borate, preferably borax.
