Abstract

Pharmaceutical iron preparations for oral administration comprise a mixture of a ferrous compound and, as a promoter of iron absorption, a succinate in an amount more than equivalent to the ferrous compound, both said ferrous compound and said succinate being physiologically innocuous and readily soluble in gastric or intestinal fluids or both. The succinate is succinic acid, succinic anhydride or a salt of succinic acid, e.g. the sodium, ammonium or magnesium salt. Specified iron salts are ferrous sulphate, ferrous chloride, ferrous gluconate and ferrous sulphate-glycine complex. Optional ingredients are: (a) stabilizing agents, e.g. sorbitol and ascorbic acid, (b) surface-active agents, (c) pH regulators, (d) vitamins, and (e) flavour essences and sugar. The preparations may be put up in the form of solutions, syrups, capsules and tablets. Specified vitamins are riboflavin, sodium riboflavin-5-phosphate, aneurine hydrochloride, aneurine mononitrate, nicotinamide, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine hydrochloride and Vitamin B12.
