Abstract

933,086. Grinding rail-ends. CHEMETRON CORPORATION. Dec. 29, 1961, No. 46721/61. Class 60. An apparatus for grinding the end portions of a moving rail section preparatory to welding lengths together comprises a grinding device having means sensitive to the relative movement between the rail and the grinding device whereby the latter is rendered alternately active and inactive so that only certain predetermined portions of the rail near its ends are ground. The grinding device, Fig. 1, comprises a pair of endless abrasive belts 241, 242 for grinding the running and base faces of the rail-section 67 over a small area adjacent an end, each belt encompassing three rollers, at least one of which is motor-driven. A fourth roller, 247, is movable to bring a portion of each belt into grinding contact by means of fluid-pressure actuators 250 and 251 controlled by a pair of valves 253, 254, of a type which remain open for a predetermined period. The sensing mechanism, Fig. 2, for opening the valves to bring the grinding elements into their operative positions comprises rollers 261, 262 mounted on pivoted levers 263, 264, spring-loaded through levers 271, 272 to swing horizontally into the path of the moving rail section so that when rollers 261, 262 are contacted by the leading edge of the rail web the valves 253 and 254 are opened for the pre-set period and closed until again opened by the action of the trailing edge of the web on the mechanism so that the top and base surfaces of the rail are ground at the opposite ends of the rail. The trip mechanism, by which a valve is actuated during the return swing of the lever 271, is shown in Fig. 3; the lever 272 is operative when swung in the opposite sense.
