Abstract

932,476. Shovelling-machines. RUSTON-BUCYRUS Ltd. Feb. 8, 1960 [March 17, 1959], No. 4318/60. Class 68 (1). A saddle block 29 mounted for pivotal movement about an axis transverse of the boom 13 of a shovel excavator is so constructed as to allow of the dipper stick 23 of the excavator to be able to rotate in the block about the longitudinal axis of the stick against energy-absorbing snubber means 35 or 35<SP>1</SP> associated with the block. The snubber means may be a mechanical brake 35 of the dry friction type or a pair of opposed single - acting hydraulic shock absorbers 35<SP>1</SP>. A brake or the shock absorbers may be mounted on a or each of a pair of upstanding lugs 28 on the saddle block. Either ring gearing 30 on the bearing sleeves supporting the dipper stick in the block engages ring gearing 36 on the moving parts of the brake or brakes 35, or a radiallyextending arm 42 extends from the dipper stick 23 to between for engagement with one or the other of the opposed plungers 43 of the shock absorbers 35<SP>1</SP>. A loosely-fitting key 33 and keyway 34 between the stick and the or each bearing sleeve or the spacing of the arm 42 between the plungers 43 allow of the dipper stick turning freely over a predetermined range of movement before the snubber means becomes operative.
