Abstract

931,709. Skittles. FIBERMOLD CORPORATION. May 14, 1962, No. 18496/62. Class 132 (2). A bowling pin is made of moulded plastic and comprises a body 1 having a cylindrical cavity 5 at the lower end, and a lower member 12 completing the contour and having a cylindrical shell 16 at the upper end bonded into said body 1. The dimensions of the cavity are such as to make the sound on impact similar to that of a solid wooden pin, and the density of the material and position of the cavity are made to simulate the weight and centre of gravity of that of a wooden pin. The head of the pin is provided with a tubular insert of aluminium or harder plastic having an aperture 9, the size of which is adjusted to produce a tone similar to a wooden pin. An alternative embodiment is shown in which the tubular shell 19, Fig. 5, of the lower member is provided with a ring 21 of marine plywood to give added strength at the impact area. Cavities are provided in the base for bias loading in accordance with the bias found in some wooden pins.
