Abstract

931,078. Variable-speed friction gears. F. COMIDA, and G. OBONI. Oct. 2, 1959 [Oct. 15, 1958; March 25, 1959], No. 33402/59. Class 80 (2). A continuously variable friction gear comprises driving and driven discs 4 frictionally engaging a freely rotatable oblique disc 8 which is adjustable in its own plane to vary the gear ratio. Support discs 4a are loaded by springs 7 so that the disc 8 is clamped between pairs of discs 4, 4a. The edges of the discs 4, 4a may be bevelled or rounded. Disc 8 is mounted by a bearing 17 on a pin 9 carried by a carriage 10 slidable along a guide 11, the carriage being adjusted by a knob 14 having a pinion 13 meshing a rack formed on the carriage. Limited universal movement of the disc 8 is permitted by the bearing 17, or in an alternative construction by play between the carriage and guide and by the mounting of the guide in the casing, in order to ensure correct positioning of the disc 8 relative to the discs 4. In modifications the driving and driven disc 4 are in perpendicular planes, and the driven disc may drive an output shaft through reduction gearing. In another modification, Fig. 10, the carriage 10 is secured to the guide 11 by a pin 27 and the guide is screwthreaded at 11a so that it can be adjusted by means of a threaded sleeve 30 which is held axially. In the modification of Fig. 8 two driving discs 24 are geared to an input shaft 23 and frictionally drive simultaneously adjustable discs 8 driving a common output disc 24b.
