Abstract

An ionic cooker hood removes fume contaminants such as oil particles with a series of opposingly charged electrodes and an odour filter. Fumes from the cooking area am drawn into the cooking hood with a blower 24 driven by a variable speed motor. The fumes are then passed through a series of electrodes 32, 34. The electrodes are constructed of expanded stainless steel sheets or steel wool for charging and collecting oil particles. A plurality of small sharp edged slits on the electrodes are such that a low voltage applied across the electrodes charges and attracts the oil particles effectively. The lower voltage minimizes the chance of accidental fire or explosion. Any residual oil particles and odour are collected by an activated charcoal filter 36 located downstream from the electrodes. Heaters are disposed nearthe electrodes 32,34 prevent the accumulated oil particles on the electrodes from solidifying even in cold environment. The apparatus is operational when an extendible hood 20 increases the effective area of air intake. The filter 36 is negatively charged to remove ozone and emit negative ions. The heaters may be actuated when the temperature falls below a predetermined value. A plate 30 is pivoted for access to the filters. <IMAGE>
