Abstract

A cleansing material in liquid form which is suitable for cleaning surfaces which have been radioactively contaminated comprises a mixture of a detergent composition and a liquid material, e.g. natural rubber latex stabilized with ammonia, which will dry, cure or polymerize to form a continous coherent flexible film which can be stripped from the surface to which it has been applied. The detergent composition may contain an ammonium or alkali metal polyphosphate such as sodium tripolyphosphate; sodium carbonate; hydrochloric acid; an amino- or imino-polycarboxylic acid such as ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid; a hydroxytricarboxylic acid such as citric acid; a non-ionic surface active agent such as an alkylphenolethylene oxide condensate; an anionic surface active agent such as a C10-18 sec. alkyl sulphate or an alkylaryl sulphonate; sodium carboxymethyl cellulose; thickness, such as ammonium or alkali metal polyacrylates; abrasive scouring powders; and pigment. In use, the composition is sprayed or brushed on to the contaminated surface, allowed to form a film, and the film together with most of the contamination then stripped from the surface. Specifications 848,588 and 856,377 are referred to.
