Abstract

930,087. Road vehicle suspensions. USTAV PRO VYZKUM MOTORVYCH VOZIDEL. Jan. 28, 1960 [Feb. 3, 1959], No. 3176/60. Class 108(2). A suspension system for a vehicle comprises a spring 1, Fig. 1, a stirrup 311 engaging one end of the spring and pivoting about an axis 60 on a sprung or unsprung part of the vehicle and means for pivoting the other end of the spring on the other part of the vehicle. The stirrup 3<SP>11</SP> is of inverted U-shape with the ends of the limbs pivoted at 60 to a similarly shaped bracket 6 secured by a bolt 63 to a longitudinal member 46 of the vehicle frame. The lower end of the spring bears against a member 3 pivoted at 4 on a link 7 which is in turn pivoted at 9 to the member 46 and connected to a rear axle 7<SP>11</SP>. A rod 61 riveted to the stirrup slidably engages a bore in the member 3. When the load on the suspension increases, the stirrup rotates anticlockwise about the axis 60 so that the moment of the spring about the pivot 9 increases very gradually. Fig. 4 shows a wishbone type of suspension in which a stirrup 311 is rotated clockwise about a pivotal connection 60 with a bracket 6a to give a gradually decreasing moment from the spring 1 with increasing deflection. A second spring 1<SP>1</SP> mounted in a stirrup 3<SP>1</SP> angularly adjustable by a rod 10 about a pivotal connection in the bracket 6a coaxial with a pin 4 gives a combined moment which increases with deflection. The rod 10 may be adjusted manually or automatically and the spring 1<SP>1</SP> normally remains in a fixed position during deflection of the suspension. Conical, variable pitch, rubber and pneumatic springs having non-linear characteristics may be used. In Figs. 6 and 7, a rear axle 7<SP>11</SP> is pivotally connected by a bolt 69 to a link 7 pivoted at 9 to a longitudinal member 46 of the vehicle frame and at 60b to a pair of elements 73 having arms 73a connected by a common pivot 32 to a rod 10 for manual or automatic control of the stiffness of the suspension. Further pivots 60a connect the elements 73 to a stirrup 3<SP>11</SP> which contains one or more springs 1<SP>11</SP> and is telescopically connected by a pin 61<SP>11</SP> to an abutment 3 pivotally mounted at 4<SP>11</SP> on the member 46. The Specification contains illustrations of the suspension characteristics.
