Abstract

929,703. Supporting cables. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc. June 25, 1959 [July 10, 1958], No. 21854/59. Class 36. [Also in Group XXV] A one-piece fastener made of a plastic comprises a flexible strap-like body 22, a first lateral stud 28 at or near an end of the body on which is a radially resilient shoulder facing the body, a second lateral stud 40 at or near an end of the body, which tapers to a tip and on which is a shoulder 44 facing the body, and, in or on the body a hole 46 placed to receive the second stud when the body is bent into a loop, the hole being in width greater than the tip of the second stud but less than the second stud at its shoulder and either the second stud or the wall of the hole or both being sufficiently resilient radially to enable the shoulder to be forced into the hole and then retained there. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 3 a plurality of holes 46 are provided each of which can engage the stud 40. The stud 28 has two radially resilient shoulders 30 and 32 so that it can be engaged with panels of different thicknesses; the stud 28 also has an axially extending recess 34 to facilitate collapsing of the stud during application to apertured panel. The stud 28 has a substantially oval outer peripheral surface and the recess 34 is circular in cross-section so that the stud is provided with opposite side areas having relatively thin walls which may be more readily collapsed. In a modification, Fig. 6, the stud 40a is made coaxial with the stud 28a. The second stud 40a is connected to the first stud by providing it with an extension 46 which is connected to the outer end of the first stud 28a within the recess 34a. In a modification of this construction, Fig. 9, the studs 28b and 40b are provided with a recess 34b which extends axially through both studs to facilitate collapsing of the studs during application of the fastener and to prevent radial collapsing during use a drive pin 50 is provided which is inserted into the recess 34 with a force fit. In another modification of the constructions shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the positions of the studs 40 and 28 are interchanged and the stud 40 instead of being of oval peripheral shape is of semicircular section but with a web which extends from the base of the semicircle. In a modification of this construction the stud 40 is of rectangular crosssection as are the holes 46 with which it engages. This latter construction may also be modified by arranging the stud 40 so that it is normally in line with the body but flexed to a position at right angles to the body during the use of the fastener. In a further construction, Fig. 17, the stud 28e is extended on the offset side of the body to provide a socket with a central hole 40e for receiving one of a plurality of studs 46e at the other end of the body.
