929,432. Closing cartons. ADHESIVE TAPES Ltd. Oct. 30, 1959 [Oct. 31, 1958], No. 34968/58. Class 94(1). Carton sealing apparatus of the kind in which successive cartons are fed on a conveyer 2 past means for applying adhesive to a turned-back flap 8 and then past means for rotating the flap about its hinge to close the carton, comprises an arm 5 extending into the path of cartons on the conveyer and displaceable by the leading face of a carton 1 to cause an arm 6 mounted alongside the conveyer to close the flap 8. The nose 9 of a wire ramp 3 engages underneath the leading corner nearest the hinge of the flap 8 which is thus lifted until it stands vertically alongside the arm 6. The leading face of the carton engages arm 5 causing a shaft 4 to rotate so that the arm 6 closes the flap 8. A spring 7 returns the arm 5 to lie across the path of the next carton. Corresponding mechanism on the other side of the conveyer closes the flap 10. The adhesive tends to keep the flaps closed but a strip of adhesive tape may also be applied. The arm 6 may be disposed below the level of the carton top and be arranged to be initially lifted by a rising butt mechanism before closing the flap 8. The levels of the arms 5, 6 may be adjustable.
