The end flaps of an open-ended carton (30), Fig. 3A (not shown), engaged on an endless conveyer by flights 7, Fig. 1, are folded in and glued down in a sequence of operations, side guides 23, 24, the latter being made of a resilient strip of metal, spring biased inwards, holding the flaps closed until the applied glue is set. An upper guide 22, bearing frictionally on the top of the carton, keep it squarely erected throughout the operations. In the embodiment, the vertical side flaps (31, 32) are first folded in by a side guide element 12 with flared entry 12a and a rotating arm 13, driven in phase with the flight. The lower flap (33) is then folded upwards by a plough 16. Finally the upper flap (34) passes between a guide 19 and a gluing roller 17 and is then folded down by a plough 21. The completed carton finally passes on to a lengthy part of its track provided with the side guides 23, 24. To allow for different sizes of cartons, one chain (6), Fig. 2 (not shown), of the conveyer is adjustable in distance from a second chain (5). Similarly the gluing roller 17 and glue reservoir may be adjusted in height together with the guide 19. The machine may be used for the closing and sealing of both ends of the carton by duplicating the means on both sides of the conveyer.
