Abstract

929,357. Control of A.C. motors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 1, 1962 [Feb. 6, 1961], No. 4389/61. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (3). The speed of a three-phase commutator motor is controlled in stepped relation by means of a pilot motor which is coupled to the brushgear and is associated with a drum controller having the same number of operating positions as the desired speeds of the commutator motor. A limit switch is engageable by the brush-gear for each desired speed of operation, and, except at the lowest speed, the final movement of the brush-gear before it is brought to rest is in the speed-increasing direction. The drum controller has duplicate operating positions for reversible operation of the commutator motor. The pilot motor is reversed if the controller is switched from one operating position to a second and then returned to the first position before the limit switch corresponding to the second position has been actuated. To prevent one or more of the operating speeds from being obtained if the load current of the commutator motor exceeds a given value, the coil of a relay is energized in accordance with the load current to de-energize the pilot motor when the load current reaches the given value. The commutator motor is braked mechanically immediately prior to the removal of the supply from the motor. Specification 409,485 is referred to.
