Abstract
Cement clinker is produced by burning in a kiln which has a preheating zone and a burning zone a mixture comprising the cement raw materials, a carbonaceous material and an inorganic compound such as an alkaline earth metal sulphate so that the inorganic compound is reduced in an endothermic reaction in the preheating zone and is then oxidised in an exothermic reaction in the burning zone. The inorganic compound preferably calcium sulphate and the carbonaceous material such as boiler ash, fly ash, coke breeze, carbonaceous shale or low grade coal are preferably mixed in stoichiometric proportions for the reduction of the sulphate to the sulphide. All the materials may be ground together with or without water or the inorganic compound and the carbonaceous material may be separately ground and/or granulated prior to mixing with the raw material.
