Abstract

928,181. Internal shoe-drum brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Feb. 13, 1962 [March 3, 1961], No. 7778/61. Class 103 (1). In a brake actuator having a linearlymovable cam element 4 engaged by a member 3 operatively connected to a brake shoe 1 such that movement of the element 4 actuates the brake, the element 4 is operatively connected to a wall 16 of a chamber 10 to which fluid may be applied so as to move that wall and thereby the element 4 through the medium of a member 5 which is guided in a second wall 9 of the chamber 10. The arrangement is such that both the end portion of the member 5 connected to the wall 16 and the portion of the member 5 guided in the second wall are laterally displaceable so that the member is self-aligning. As shown, the chamber 10 is in the form of a fluid-tight bag the lower wall 9 of which is formed with a central re-entrant portion that is secured by a clip 8 to a rigid guide sleeve through which the rod 5 passes. The end of the rod 5 is provided with a locknut 12 which is urged by a spring 6 against a collar 13 on a plate 14 between which and an annular plate 15 the wall 16 is clamped. The brake may alternatively be applied by means of a pin 24 secured to the brake rigging having a lost-motion connection with a slot 23 in a bracket 22 secured to the plate 15. The wall 16 may be constituted by a diaphragm, in which case, the member 5 may be guided in the second wall by a tubular element of flexible material encircling the member, one end of the tubular member being connected to the second wall and the other end being slidably connected to the member 5. Alternatively, the chamber may be constituted by a bellows.
