Abstract
In the pyrolysis of hydrocarbons by contact with a hot carrier gas to form acetylene and ethylene, the reactants are surrounded by a veil of steam flowing along the walls of the reaction chamber at a velocity at least equal to that of the reactants and in the same direction. The steam may be introduced into the chamber where the hydrocarbon is mixed with the hot gas or more usually at the beginning of the reaction chamber. The velocity may be 1-1.5 times that of the reactants, suitably in the range 100-500 m./sec. At the point of entry the steam may be 1-15 mm. in width and at a temperature of 200-1,000 DEG C. and may be preheated by heat exchange with the reactor walls before entering. The reactor walls should have a temperature of 700-900 DEG C. The reactor may have parallel walls or be conical in shape, the angle of aperture being 10-30 degrees. Where the reactor is long, further steam may be added to maintain the veil at points along the reactor walls.
