Abstract

Gelatin layers are hardened by incorporating therein a reaction product of at least 2 mols. of glyoxal or an alkyl substituted glyoxal and 1 mol. of a compound containing an -OH group separated by a chain of at least two carbon atoms from either another -OH group or an -NH2 or -NH- group. Hardening agents specified are the reaction products of 2 mols. of glyoxal with 1 mol. of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, diethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, thiodiglycol, but-2-yn-1:4-diol or propan-1:3-diol, the reaction products of 3 mols. of glyoxal with 1 mol. of ethanolamine, diethanolamine or triethanolamine, and the compound tetra(formylhydroxymethoxy)-neopentane. a :o -Diformyl(1:9-dihydroxy-2:5:8-trioxanonane) is obtained by mixing 1 mole of diethylene glycol and 2 moles of glyoxal (as an aqueous solution) and placing in a vacuum desiccator containing phosphorus pentoxide for several days. Similar products are obtained by using ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, thiodiglycol, but-2-yn-1:4-diol, propan 1:3-diol or a polyethylene glycol instead of diethylene glycol. Ethanolamine-glyoxal adducts are similarly prepared from 3 moles of glyoxal and 1 mole of mono-, di- or tri-ethanolamine. Tetra (formylhydroxymethyl)-neopentane is similarly prepared from 4 moles of glyoxal and 1 mole of pentaerythritol.
