Abstract

926,129. Valves. L. SUMNER. May 22, 1959 [Feb. 25, 1958], No. 6114/58. Class 135. A diaphragm valve consisting of a straightthrough bore 2, which may be of flattened or oval cross-section in its mid-portion 2c (as shown), or of circular cross-section throughout its length, is provided with a seating 3 for the periphery of the diaphragm 5 which seating is situated entirely above the centre-line 17 of the bore 2 and curved, as in Specification 808,074, in planes parallel to the direction of movement of the diaphragm. The diaphragm, which is clamped between the seating 3 and a bonnet 6 by bolts 7, is moulded from natural or artificial rubber or a flexible plastic material to a shape corresponding to the fully open position of the valve or to a position intermediate the fully open and closed positions and with its clamping flange flat or shaped to conform with the seating 3. It has a stud 11 embedded in it during moulding and a transversely-extending ridge 20. A canvas reinforcement 19 may be provided. The valve is actuated by a screwed, rising spindle 12a co-operating with an actuating member 9. In a modification, the valve is actuated by a non-rising spindle having screwthreaded engagement with a nut mounted in the member 9, and the ridge 20 is omitted. The bore 2 may have a small transverse ridge for engagement by the diaphragm. The invention is also applicable to the kind of valve shown in Figs. 1 to 3 of Specification 808,074.
