Abstract
A process of producing high tensile strength and notch toughness in steel comprises subjecting rolled steel containing less than 0.30% C, less than 0.50% Si, and less than 1.5% Mn, directly from hot rolling or after normalizing to cooling at the rate of 1 DEG C. to 10 DEG C. per second over a range of at least 100 DEG C. between 1000 DEG C. and 600 DEG C., subsequently holding the steel at 350 DEG C. to 650 DEG C. for 30 to 90 minutes, and then cooling in air. The treatment may be applied to low alloy steels and carbon steels. Specification 916,947 is referred to.
