Abstract

925,294. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Feb. 17, 1961 [Feb. 27, 1960], No. 36338/59. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] In an hydraulically-operated disc brake in which the piston moves substantially at rightangles to the plane of the disc, the piston engages the backing plate of the friction pad over an area which is not symmetrical with the axis of the cylinder. In a spot-type disc brake, the calliper is formed with two cylinders 19 containing pistons 18 which engage backing plates 16 of friction pads 15 through shims 21. The shims 21 are of substantially the same shape as the backing plates but have an outward extension to provide for an arrow-shaped aperture 24 to indicate their position in relation to the normal rotation of the disc. The shims are pierced with an opening 22 having an arcuate outer edge of radius greater than the piston (shown dotted) and a straight edge parallel to a radius of the piston. The piston thus bears on only a portion of the shim away from the direction of rotation of the disc to prevent squeal.
