Abstract
A hard, temper resistant steel alloy, for billets or die blocks useful in aluminium die casting and hot work forging die application or for solid fuel rocket cases and aircraft members, consists of by weight:- .C.10.3 to 10.4% .Mn.0.2 to 1% .Si.0.5 to 1.5% .Cr.3 to 4% .Mo.2.5 to 3.5% .V.10.5 to 1% .Co.1.5 to 2.5% with Fe and incidental impurities as balance. The steel melt may be prepared in an electric arc or induction furnace under air, vacuum or inert gas atmospheres, and turned into ingots. The ingots may be hot worked to 2000 DEG F. by forging, pressing or rolling, then cooled and machined to shape prior to heat treating which may comprise heating at 1800-2000 DEG F., quenching, e.g. in air, oil or salt, with or without sub-zero cooling, e.g. to - 320 DEG F., and tempering at temperatures up to 1300 DEG F., preferably in two or three cycles.
