Abstract

A tubular film of a thermoplastic polymeric material made by extrusion of a melt through an annular nozzle 2 followed by inflation with air or other gas, is conveyed through a first duct 4 at a temperature of from 5 DEG to 20 DEG C. below the softening point of the film but above its second order transition temperature, the pressure in the first duct corresponding to the internal pressure of the air or other gas in the tubular film, and the hardened and substantially amorphous film is then passed into a highly polished pipe 7 heated to substantially the same temperature, the diameter of the pipe being equal to the diameter of the tubular film, and is then guided into a second heated duct 8 in which <PICT:0924501/IV(a)/1> the pressure is lower than that in the first duct, and wound up by rollers (not shown) rotating at such a speed as to effect longitudinal stretching of the film. In the apparatus shown hot air is supplied to duct 4 via inlet 5, escaping through outlet 6, while the tube is inflated with air or other gas via 3. The duct 8 is heated with radially-arranged infra-red heaters 9. Specified materials include polyethylene, polyamides, polyesters, polyvinyl chloride and polyvinylidene chloride.
