Abstract

923,935. Pneumatic conveyers on vehicles. Dec. 6, 1961 [Jan. 30, 1961], No. 43675/61. Classes 78 (1) and 78 (4). A pipe 91, shown in longitudinal section in Fig. 5 and in transverse section in Fig. 6, passes through the lower end 81 of a material-containing hopper so that material is drawn from the hopper when air entering the pipe at one end is sucked out at the other: the pipe communicates with the interior of the hopper through a port 94 which can be closed by a valve 95. In the form shown, the valve 95 is carried by a diaphragm 96 so that it automatically closes if there is no material in the hopper when suction is applied. The invention is applied to a railroad truck having six hoppers joined in series by conduits such as 131, 132 joining the pipes 91 in the hoppers. The arrangement then ensures that, when one hopper is empty, its corresponding pipe 91 is sealed so that air does not enter it to prevent the other hoppers unloading. In the form shown in plan in Fig. 2, the hoppers are joined in two circuits 51, 54, 55 and 52, 53, 56 with trunking arranged so that suction can be applied at either of two points 110, 120 while air is admitted at a corresponding point 125, 115. The valves controlling the suction and air inlet connections are operated by hand wheels 117, 127 on the sides of the car.
