Abstract
923,313. Mixing fluids in flow. LANCY LABORATORIES Inc. Nov. 8, 1960 [April 22, 1960], No. 38297/60. Class 86. [Also in Group XXIX] An apparatus for supplying chlorine as gas in constant ratio to a substantially constant flow of water A comprises a Venturi mixing unit B and a gas regulating unit E which is attached to a pressure cylinder D containing partially liquefied chlorine. The carrier B, Fig. 8, has a valve member 78 carried by a diaphragm 80 and having an annulus 78a seated on a gasket 74 when the apparatus is inoperative, thus acting as a check valve to prevent backflow of water through the apparatus. The underside of the diaphragm 80 is subjected to reduced pressure induced by the Venturi 66, and is drawn downward so that the valve 78a, 74 opens and the foot of the stem 82 engages the floor of the valve chamber opening also the valve 81, 83 as shown, and placing the gas supply inlet 73a, 73b and hence pipe 61, Fig. 1, in connection with the Venturi. The pipe 61 is in communication with a bore 35d, Fig. 4, in the unit E, and thence via passages 54c, 48c, 48b, 35b, 23c and 23b with one side of a diaphragm 33 carrying a valve member 28 to which is attached the stem 26 of a plug valve 26a seating on a member 25 and shown closed in Fig. 4. Reduction of pressure induced by the Venturi deflects the diaphragm 33 and thus opens the valve 25, 26a and emitting chlorine from the cylinder D ; the rate of flow of the gas is regulated by needle valve 58 and measured by flowmeter 52. The gas pressure remains substantially constant until the cylinder approaches exhaustion; when the pressure falls below a predetermined level, diaphragm 33 will be deflected further until the annulus 28a seats on the gasket 27 interrupting the gas supply. At the same time a spring- pressed pivoted signal arm 40 (see Figs. 2, 5, 6, 10, 11 and 12 (not shown)) is released by withdrawal of a stud 38, which is secured to the tail of the valve stem 26 and projects beyond the face of the unit E to act as a detent. Any excess pressure of gas reaching the unit B will deflect the diaphragm 94 to lift the annulus 92a of valve member 92 off its seat 75 and vent the gas to atmosphere through a central aperture in the disc 95, and the outlet 88b. As the spring 96 is weaker than the spring 85 controlling the diaphragm 80, the valve 78a, 74 will remain closed.
