Abstract

1,032,554. Sliding clasp fasteners. LIGHTNING FASTENERS Ltd. July 30, 1964 [Aug. 14, 1963 (2)], Nos. 32134/63 and 32135/63. Heading E2S. A stringer for a sliding clasp fastener comprises a carrier tape and U-shaped coupling elements formed from a single plastics filament and secured to the carrier tape each coupling element having one limb provided with an extension which is folded to a position in which an end portion is substantially parallel to and in the same plane as the limbs of that coupling element the carrier tape being folded around the end portion of each extension substantially to conceal one side of the U-shaped coupling elements. In one construction, Fig. 5 the extension 3a of said limb 3 of each U-shaped element 2 is folded around the other limb 4 of the element so that the element with its extension forms a substantial G shape, the carrier tape 7 after being folded around the end portion of each extension terminating between the limbs of each U-shaped element. The elements are either formed to shape first and the tape fed into the elements or alternatively the filament is first bent to a regular meander form which is then bent about a longitudinal axis to U shape and the tape is sewn between the limbs 3, 4 and the extension of each element is bent around its limb 4. In a second construction, Fig. 10 the extension 22 of the limb 24 of each U-shaped element is folded away from the other limb 23 so that the element with its extension forms a substantial S shape the carrier tape 29 being folded round the end portion of each extension and a spacing braid 28 being located between the limbs of the U-shaped elements. The elements are secured to the tape by one or more rows of stitching and each element is formed with a coupling projection. To prevent tilting of the elements on the tapes, in the case of the G-shaped elements braids can be stitched to each stringer so that they abut when the two stringers are coupled together: alternatively the elements have depressions formed in the base portion of each U-shaped element so that the edge of the opposite tape engages the depressions.
