Abstract

922,982. Measuring electrically. CARL SCHENCK MASCHINENFABRIK G.m.b.H. Oct. 12, 1961 [Oct. 14, 1960], No. 36705/61. Class 40 (1). A load cell or pressure gauge comprises a circular plate 1 peripherally supported by a rigid annular portion 2, the thickness of the plate varying as a function of distance from the centre in such a way that, when a force P is applied to a central hub 3 of the plate, the sign of strain in the plate changes abruptly at a predetermined distance from the centre. Thus, as shown, the direction of strain changes at the thinnest part of the plate, which is approximately half the radius in distance from the centre, so that, of strain gauges 7 . . . 10 fixed to the underside of the plate, gauges 7 and 10 are compressed while gauges 8 and 9 are stretched; the magnitude of the strain is the same in all the gauges, which are connected in a Wheatstone bridge arrangement for measurement purposes. The strain gauges are protected by a cover 5 bolted to the plate. To maintain the pressure in the space 4 between plate and cover equal to ambient pressure, the cover may be fitted with a flexible diaphragm 11, the chamber 12 between the diaphragm and the rest of the cover being open to the atmosphere at 13. When the diaphragm is not provided, the cover may have a central stop member to limit the deflection of the plate. For measuring tractive forces, the exterior of the cover is provided with a central hub. In a modification, the strain gauges are replaced by an inductance coil mounted on the cover which co-operates with a feeler on the plate to detect the degree of deflection of the plate.
