Abstract

922,742. Compressed air motors. BRIGGS BROS. (ENGINEERING) Ltd. Nov. 14, 1960 [Nov. 13, 1959], No. 38513/59. Class 110 (2). Compressed air to drive a reversible vane motor passes into the motor through a union 8 and, according to the angular position of the conical valve 6 which is rotatable through 90 degrees, passes either through passage 16 or 16a to one side or the other of the rotor 3. The air is exhausted on the side of the rotor opposite to the inlet, through holes 14 in the cylindrical casing 2, and holes 13 in the sleeve valve 4 which surrounds the casing. The exhaust and inlet valves rotate together as the control collar 9 is rotated, the inlet valve 6 being connected to the collar by a pin 10 and the exhaust valve 4 by another pin (Fig. 1, not shown). The bottom of the slots in which the vanes 15 slide are connected alternately to the inlet and exhaust by passages 17, 18 so that the vanes are only forced outward by air pressure when they are moving outwards. An outer casing may surround the sleeve valve, exhaust air then escaping through holes in the mounting frames 1 and 1a.
