Abstract

922,572. Nuclear reactors. C. A. PARSONS & CO. Ltd. Sept. 29, 1961 [Oct. 10, 1960], No. 34663/60. Class 39 (4). A nuclear reactor having thermocouple arrangements for measuring temperatures wherein the thermocouple cables pass from a fuel channel through a plug sealing a standpipe passing through a reactor shield and pressure vessel is characterized in that the cables are connected together so as to form in effect a flexible flat belt. In Fig. 1 some or all of the fuel elements in a fuel channel are provided with thermocouples, the cables 4 of which pass up the side of the channel to a contact box 5 located at the top of the channel. The box 5 is in two parts which are separable by the application of a lifting force. The thermocouple cables emanating from the box 5 pass through a charge fan 6 and a guide tube 7 supported on the lower side of a plug 8 which seals a standpipe 9 passing through the reactor shield and pressure vessel (not shown). The cables pass through the plug and over a pulley 11 to an anchorage 12. The pulley may be mounted on a support 13 which rests in a recess in the plug to allow the pulley to be raised some distance before the lifting is applied to the plug; this allows the upper part of box 5 to be drawn clear of the fuel channel and into the guide tube 7 before the plug 8 is lifted. The cables, at least in the part which passes over the pulley and preferably from where they leave the box 5, are interconnected either by a wire interwoven with the cables, Fig. 3 (not shown), or by being interwoven themselves, Fig. 4 (not shown). This relieves strain on the cables during charging and discharging and reduces the chance of the cables becoming entangled; if a cable is broken it is held in position and is not likely to obstruct the fuel channel.
