Abstract
929,126. Nuclear reactors. C. A. PARSONS & CO. Ltd., NUCLEAR POWER PLANT CO. Ltd., and A. E. I. JOHN THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. March 16, 1962 [May 2, 1961], No. 15887/61. Class 39 (4). In a thermocouple arrangement for a nuclear reactor fuel element, which includes a thermocouple cable comprising a sheath enclosing thermocouple conductors, the cable passes through a tensile weak link device attached to the fuel element, the sheath being removed from the conductors for a portion of their length within the device and adjacent ends of the sheath on either side of the bared portion of the conductors being joined by a tensile weak link of tensile strength lower than that of the sheath but greater than that of the conductors, the bared portions of the conductors being of a length such that they do not become taut under the application of a pull to the cable until the weak link has broken. Fig. 1c shows a plan view of an arrangement partly assembled. A base plate 1 attached to the fuel element (not shown) is provided with a central slot 2 into which the cable 5 is inserted. Part of the sheath of the cable is removed and the base conductors 7 of this part fit into grooves in the lower part 4a of an insulating box which fits into a rectangular recess in the base plate. A cover (not shown in Fig. lc) fits over the lower part 4a of the insulating box, and a weak link (not shown in Fig. 1c) passes over the cover and joins together the two parts of the sheath. The weak link can be covered by a cover plate to protect it from damage during loading into the reactor. For convenience the sheath of the cable may be enlarged, as shown, in the portion fitting in the slot 2, and the enlarged portion may have a square or rectangular cross-section which closely fits the slot to prevent undue transverse movement of the cable in the slot.
