Abstract

A pickling solution, especially suitable for treating titanium and titanium base alloys, comprises 5-30%, preferably 10%, of acetic acid, 0.5-17%, preferably 2.5%, of hydrogen fluoride and the balance water. The immersion time varies with the strength of the solution and the degree of scale, being up to 20 mins. The treatment of sheet, strip, bars, plate and castings to remove oxide film and "grind lines" is disclosed. Heavy and tightly adhering scale can be removed by the usual molten caustic bath method. Examples of alloys treated with the solution include Ti, 2% Fe, 2% Mo, 2% Cr and Ti, 5% Al, 2.5% Su.
