Abstract

A method for the anodic oxidation of aluminium, or aluminium alloys, carried out in a solution comprising sulpho-salicylic acid and one or more of metal sulphates and sulphuric acid balance water, as claimed in claims 10 to 17 and 20 to 23 of the parent Specification, at a current density of 10-100 a.s.f. and a voltage of 20-120 volts is characterized in that the initial voltage is raised during a first period to keep the current density constant until a selected voltage is reached and this selected voltage is maintained for the rest of the oxidation period. The total oxidation period may be from 1-150 minutes and the temperature of the bath 55-85 DEG F. The coating may be sealed in an aqueous solution at a pH of 5-6, a temperature of 180-212 DEG F. for a period of 10-30 minutes. Sealing with a soap solution as claimed in claims 20-23 of the parent Specification is also disclosed. In an example the metal is cleaned by immersion for five minutes in a solution comprised of 40 g.p.l. Na2CO3, 20 g.p.l. Na3PO4, 5 g.p.l. sodium metasilicate made up with water and kept at 160 DEG F.
