Abstract

Relates to 6-aminopenicillanic acid derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0922278/IV(a)/1> wherein X1 represents chloro, bromo or hydrogen, X2 represents chloro or, when both X1 and X3 are hydrogen, may also represent bromo, X3 is hydrogen but may also represent chloro when both X1 and X2 are chloro and M represents hydrogen or a pharmaceutically acceptable cation, such as 6-(a -methoxy-3,4-dichlorophenylacetamido)-penicillanic acid, the D- and L-epimers thereof, 6-(a - methoxy- 4-chlorophenyl -acetamido)-penicillanic acid, 6-(a - methoxy- 4-bromophenyl-acetamido)- penicillanic acid, 6-(a -methoxy-3-bromo- 4-chlorophenyl-acetamido)-penicillanic acid, and 6-(a -methoxy-3,4,5-trichlorophenyl-acetamido)-penicillanic acid. The derivatives may be produced by reacting 6-aminopenicillanic acid with the corresponding halogenated a -methoxyphenylacetyl chloride or a mixed anhydride of the corresponding acid.ALSO:Pharmaceutical preparations comprise a 6-aminopenicillanic acid derivative of the general formula <FORM:0922278/VI/1> wherein X1 represents chloro, bromo or hydrogen, X2 represents chloro or, when both X1 and X3 are hydrogen, may also represent bromo, X3 is hydrogen but may also represent chloro when both X1 and X2 are chloro and M represents hydrogen or a pharmaceutically acceptable cation (see Group IV (b)). The compounds may be administered alone or in conjunction with other therapeutic agents such as sulphisoxazole, sulphamethizole, methenamine mandelate, phenylazodiaminopyridine, chloramphenicol or nitrofurantoin, either via the oral route or by injection or topical application in the form of tablets, capsules, powders, suspensions, solution or suppositories.
