Abstract

921,841. Stuffing-box substitutes. HOLBROOK ENGINEERING CO. (ACCRING- TON) Ltd. Jan. 18, 1962 [Jan. 18, 1961], No. 2010/61. Class 122 (5). The hollow rotatable shaft 22 of a steamheated roller, such as is used for calendering textile fabrics, is sealed to a stationary steam conduit 26 communicating with the bore of the shaft by means of a chevron-type packing 36 inserted between the shaft and the conduit. The shaft 22 is mounted in a ball bearing secured by an end cover 16 in a recess in a supporting bracket 10. The end of the shaft projects beyond the cover 16 into a chamber 24 formed in the conduit 26 and communicating through a passage 30 to a passage 12 in the bracket to which steam is admitted. The packing 36 is held between a cover 32 and a gland ring 38 which is retained by a shoulder 40 in the chamber 24 and is provided with small axial holes through which steam passes to expand the packing. Any steam leaking past the packing 36 escapes freely to atmosphere through the gap 42 between the covers 16, 32. The conduit 26 may be shaped as a tube projecting in the end of the shaft, the packing being fitted inside the shaft bore.
