Abstract
921,352. Valves. M. H. GROVE. March 29, 1961, No. 11584/61. Class 135. A valve comprises a body with aligned flow passages 11, a valve member 12 movable between open and closed positions, valve seating surfaces 17 surrounding the passages, and seal rings 36, each formed like a conical resilient washer, on opposite sides of the valve member. The latter is actuated by a screwed spindle 29 and has wiping means consisting of rings 50 of spring metal such as one of the stainless steels "Monel" metal (Registered Trade Mark), or bronze which engage lines 17 of similar metal or of "Hastelloy" (Registered Trade Mark). The inner periphery 43 of each seal ring may be rounded or may be perpendicular to the surfaces 38 and 39. A metallic or a non-metallic resilient material, such as nylon, may be used for the rings, the downstream ring being flattened in operation until the valve member and liner faces are in contact, the upstream pressure acting on the back of the upstream ring to assist its sealing action. Each seal-ring may be secured in its recess by a circumferential series of screws fitted with 0-rings and it may be coated with a material such as " Teflon " (Registered Trade Mark) or be backed by synthetic rubber. In a further modified construction the seal and wiping rings are mounted in recesses in the body.
