Abstract

Tallow, palm oil and lard are selectively hydrogenated to an extent sufficient to convert polyunsaturated constituents to monounsaturated without affecting the original monounsaturates, dissolving the hydrogenated fat in a solvent and fractionating the solution by holding the solution at up to three successively lower temperature levels, preferably in the range 20 DEG to 30 DEG C. to obtain in turn fractions consisting of (a) trisaturated glycerides having an iodine value below 20 and M.P. above 50 DEG C., (b) di- and mono-saturated glycerides, and (c) mono-saturated and tri-unsaturated glycerides having an iodine value above 58 and a cloud point below 10 DEG C.; fraction (b) consists of all the fatty material other than fractions (a) and (c), and where three fractionating temperature levels are used, consists of a mixture of the material obtained at the lower two levels. The hydrogenation is suitably performed at 190 DEG -200 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure in the presence of a catalyst comprising the mixed oxides of copper and chromium or nickel supported on kieselguhr. Particularly suitable solvents are 1:2-dichloroethane and a mixture of 90% acetone and 10% benzene by weight.
