Abstract

920,502. Fabrics composed of bonded threads etc.; laminates and laminating. E. BOBKOWICZ. May 11, 1959, No. 16149/59. Classes 74 (2) and 140. A non-woven textile web made from parallel warp and weft filaments, yarn, strands, ribbons or tapes laid in superposed layers and united by a bonding agent comprises at least one weft layer helically wound around one warp layer and at least one other warp or weft layer the filaments &c. of which are in staggered relation to those of the first warp or weft layer. The bonding agent may be a heat-activated thermoplastic material coated on to the wefts and warps, these being welded together at their contact points by radiant heat or high-frequency heating together with pressure. The filaments of the warp and weft layers may comprise any natural or man-made fibres, plastic material, paper, cotton, ramie, jute, sisal, henequen, flax, wool, rayon, acetate, or acrylic or polyamide resins. The bonding agents may be in the form of a solution, powder, staple fibre, filament or film. Suitable bonding agents are acrylic esters, polystyrene, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, styrene-butadiene, polyethylene, polyamides, polyolefines and ureaformaldehyde. Alternate warp filaments may be coated with bonding agent on opposite sides, the fabric formed after winding on the weft filaments being then opened into a tube. At least one additional layer of non-woven fabric, plastic film, paper, rubber or glass fabric may be applied to the completed flat web or to the inside and/or outside of the tubular web, or an additional weft layer with filaments crossing those of the existing weft or wefts, may be wound around the web. Apparatus for carrying out the invention is shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 15 (Fig. 8 being a top plan view, Fig. 9 a vertical cross-section along the line 9-9 in Fig. 8, and Fig. 15 being a vertical cross-section along the line 15-15 in Fig. 8). A warp layer 58 is fed through an arrangement 46<SP>1</SP> for applying bonding agent, then divided up into separate warp layers 58, 58a and 58b each guided through a different path to and through the constructional path 64 to the press rollers 46, 47, 48 and 49. Warp layer 58 is guided through a spacing reed 69 along the constructional path 64 to the press rollers 46 and 47. Additional groups of filments on each side of the warps are passed through central bores of weft conveying members 31a and 31b (Fig. 6) to form selvedges. The wefts constituting weft layers 37 and 237 (Fig. 15) are, by the rotating movement of weft laying assemblies 33, 233, drawn from a plurality of supply packages 53 and deposited on to the warp layer 58, and warp layers 58a and 58b, the two latter being guided between frames 28 and 29 to spacing rollers 43 and 43<SP>1</SP> and there deposited above and below the weft layer 37 and warp layer 58 in staggered relationship with layer 58. The second weft layer 237 is thereupon similarly deposited by the weft laying assembly 233. The assembly of weft and warp layers then passes between heating elements 44 and 45 and is finally pressed between rollers 46, 47, 48 and 49 and the complete web 59 wound up. The weft guiding and conveying members 31a, 31b (Figs. 8 and 16) are driven by a motor 34 and belt 61 and comprise hollow shafts having external threads, which may be two-start threads in which case the filaments of weft layer 237 are laid in recesses formed by the threads alternately with those of layer 37 and are thus in staggered relation therewith in the completed web. Alternative weft-conveying members comprise endless belts having upstanding spaced pins. The weft-laying members 33, 233 (Fig. 9) comprise ring frames 62 rotatable on rollers 35 by a motor 39 and belt 41. The filaments from the supply packages 53 are drawn over rollers 55, 38 and delivered in spaced relation through a comb 54. In an alternative construction each weft layer is supplied from a single large multifilament package rotatably mounted around the warp layer. Specification 749,914 is referred to.
